Once more with feeling

Filed under: Uncategorized — admin @ 10:32 pm

My last few epic posts have clearly illustrated I need to work on brevity.  Perhaps I should confine myself to thoughts that would fit in a haiku?  In any case, I’d like to take another stab at persuading you all on the happiness/pleasure issue.   Please post your thoughts on the following:

Which feeling is more pleasant:

A)     The sense of supreme happiness offered by the religion/ethics of your choice

B)      The competing pleasures which would prevent you from attaining that happiness

  1. I can’t really chose her becasue I don’t see my options. MAybe I don’t get the question. is the question what’s more important to you

    instant gratification

a hopefully bigger reward later on?

  2. Why the assumption that an ethic system or religion for that matter leads to Supreme happiness?
And why is there a competing pleasure for this happiness? I would say that probably in only the most strict religions
would this really be an issue.
I can see this in Fundmental hard core religions.
Fundamental Baptist (which I was raised)
    United Pentecostals
and a whole host of other religions that mentally beat their parishoners into some type of submission with
a list of man made rules a mile long.
    Women should always wear dresses.
No alcholic beverage of any type ever.
    No Coffee

In my experience these people are either confused about most things in life. Or they are some of the most hateful, self righteous, bigoted, and generally unhappy people I have ever met.
And these are the milk toast men flooding our churches that Eldridge talks about. These are the men (and women) who hide behind there churches and such. Anyway, I will leave that for another blog post sometime.

“For there are two things inside me, competing with the human self which I must try to become. They are the Animal self and the Diabolical self.
The Diabolical self is the worse of the two. That is why a cold, self righteous prig who regularly goes to church may be far nearer to hell than
a prostitute. But of course, it is better to be neither.” C.S. Lewis, Mere Christianity

This afternoon on PBS there was a program on human happiness. “The Emotional Life”
The a good deal of the scientific research concluded relationships are the primary cause of happiness in humans.
That a persons happiness can increase a close friends happiness by 15%. That this effect can go to four degrees of separation before it ends. I found this interesting, the whole study interesting.

Not always accepting everything that is labeled as scientific as hard cold fact. I must say I found this has touched a part of me.
