uhhh, thanks?

Returning to Beirut has made it possible to reconnect with old friends.  This has generally been very positive.  In some cases, I’m not quite sure what to make of the commentary.  Keeping in mind that culturally appropriate greetings often don’t translate well, I’ve been left wondering about the intentions of the following folks:

Person A:  It’s so good to see you again.  You’ve lost so much weight, I didn’t even recognize you!

Person B:  You’ve lost a lot of weight, really!

Person C:  He looks like a proper rugby player; not like you…

For the record, I’ve 12 pounds (at most…  (technically, this is about 6% of my body weight)) .

  1. Let me translate:

    A: You were FAT!

B: You are too skinny now.

C: I am jealous, that’s why I have to downplay your looks and as I can’t compete I have to compare you with someone else I am jealous of.

No, seriously. I think sometimes we interpret to much. With comments like that I’ve come to the conclusion to verify on the spot: e.g.:”So you think I was overweight last time you saw me?”, or to shake your head and shake it off…or you’ll go nuts…sometimes people just want to pay you a huge complement (not c for sure) but don’t know how to do it..
